When we designed the DoggySnooze dog bed, we didn’t do it with the intent to create a design dog bed. We did it with the purpose to create the most functional and durable dog bed possible and blend it into a contemporary design. The beauty of design is in the eye of the beholder, so it would not be natural to focus just on that.

We get a lot of comments from how much they like our design and truth to said that is flattering. The main functions we needed to implement were as true orthopedic features on an elevated chew resistant dog bed and kept a form goal in mind in which the bed would blend with your furniture or fit into the young and modernly designed living room. So, somehow form met function or let’s put it function got a bit form.

So, if your dog likes to sleep on your new light colored sofa – give them their own sofa. A DoggySnooze dog bed sofa…

Durable is number three in the list of the five key elements of the DoggySnooze dog bed. It comes with a tag – limited lifetime warranty. In other words the durability is warranted.

Let’s take a look at the design. The frame is made of aluminum and the corners of ABS – material know for its durability. Obviously, we cannot put a lifetime warranty to bed layer and let’s face it would you after 20 years still like that sand or red color? The fact that you can replace over time the bed layer to match your furniture or settings is a very valuable feature. We use high quality Cordura nylon fabric that will last a while, but lifetimes of dog beds are mostly challenged by its habitants. Some dogs have an habit of chewing their bed. Being bored and lonely are common causing for chewing on items around the house, including their own bed.

Besides the expenditure of renewing the dog bed frequently cushion type dog beds are filled with foam that contain toxic materials. You don’t want your dog chewing on foam material – even foam that is classified as non-toxic. A dog bed can be chew proof or for a better term chew resistant is where the dog has no place to start chewing on. Some cushions are chew proof when they have no zippers, but that should not be considered chew proof. Any cushion can be chewed – actually they love to drag it around and jiggle it vibrantly. The difference with the DoggySnooze dog bed and a few other with nylon fabric bed layers is that your dog has no place to start the chewing. We enclosed the connection points inside the bed frame. They can dig on the fabric, but digging to a point where it rips through cordura takes quite an effort. If you have a dog that tends to chew do not install the bolsters, because that portion is not chew-resistant.

The conclusion is that a durable bed has a metal frame with a bed layer where the connection points are enclosed. The frame will last forever and the bed layers only needs to be renewed after years of use. The bed is more expensive, but well worth the investment.

What are the benefits of an elevated or raised dog bed? Ever realized that your own bed is also raised. The first and foremost reason is that anything that comes from the floor, like cold, wet or flees will not come in contact with the bed. For dog owners in particular would be concerned that their pet may contract Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), a common ailment caused by fleas. Fleas have the ability to jump 6-7 inches up the air and almost one foot horizontally. The DoggySnooze is about 6 inches high and with the bolsters around it goes up to 9-10 inches protection. Some pet stores recommend to spray the conventional beds with a chemical, but why expose your pet to this why an elevated dog bed is a simple solution.

Besides keeping your dogs from flees and insects, a raised dog bed like the DoggySnooze also ensures that your dog is always one level above the cold hard floor. Unlike foam beds which are placed on grounds, an elevated dog bed prevents condensation, a factor which causes foam to rot.

Cleaning up is easy as the DoggySnooze comes with machine-washable cover which can be simply removed by releasing the holding rods. Maintaining the cleanliness of the DoggySnooze bed frame is even easier; just wipe the bed with a wet cloth. Being a raised bed it also allows you to clean the floor without moving the bed at all.

There is also an easthetic benefit with some of the elevated dog bed, especially the DoggySnooze. The legs and in the bolsters make it look more like a sofa to blend with the other furniture. With so many benefits the question becomes why not an elevated dog bed, like the DoggySnooze.

We claim that the DoggySnooze can be classified as an orthopedic dog bed, so we better explain why. We also use the term a healthy dog bed, so when is something orthopedic and when is something healthy. We rather call our dog bed healthy over orthopedic, because we believe that as a resting place it is much healthier for the long term, while orthopedic is kind of therapeutic. Well, let’s analyze it and see whether we can classify as healthy, orthopedic, just comfy or all of the above.

First, we would like to make a disclaimer here. There is no government standard or official designation that will qualify one dog bed orthopedic and the other not. This reality has created much confusion in the dog bedding industry, to the point that the typical consumer is not able to determine if a mattress is orthopedic or not. So, this article is written to reflect our opinion about what should be classified as orthopedic or what is healthy for your dog on the long term.

The Merriam-Webster dictionary definition of orthopedic is ‘marked by or affected with a skeletal deformity, disorder, or injury’ and the Answers.com website defines it as ‘The branch of medicine that deals with the prevention or correction of injuries or disorders of the skeletal system and associated muscles, joints, and ligaments’. I rather stick with the Answers.com definition and believe the DoggySnooze dog bed is best suitable for prevention. I am not sure if any dog bed can be used for therapeutic or orthopedic correction. The definition on Wikipedia for an orthopedic mattress is a mattress designed to give additional back support. Having a number of definitions together we can see if the DoggySnooze can be classified as orthopedic, but we also need to look at whether this bed is right (in other words healthy) for your dog.

We designed the DoggySnooze dog bed with the health of your best companion first and foremost in mind without looking up classifications or standards (as determined earlier which do not exist), but using the input of experienced and renowned veterinarians.

Let’s first take a look at the different elements of the bed of what we used and didn’t use. We do not believe in this cute soft looking cushions. They look extremely comfy and they are certainly fun to lay at for a short while, but as a bed to sleep on….imagine yourself sleeping for a night at the couch. You likely wake up feeling tired with back pain. Ever slept at those extremely stiff mattresses. Some hotels in China still have them. They are very uncomfortable to when you get on first, but you wake up well rested without back pain. Ever slept on a tempur-pedic mattress? They are very comfortable and the top layer forms itself with the shape of the body. With the DoggySnooze we designed something in the middle. A bed layer that is somewhat stiff (the stiffness is adjustable) and the layer forms itself with the body. But as we use a Cordura nylon fabric layer it has more contributing features to be classified as an orthopedic dog bed. The nylon fabric will adjust itself to the body temperature. There are heated dog beds on the market and compare them with the heated chairs in your car. For some it is comfortable, but if you sleep your life always using an electric heating blanket you disable your body heating system. Assuming that you don’t expose your dog to a freezing temperature sleeping environment we do not see any value in heated dog beds, but this is just our opinion. A heated dog bed can temporarily work for an injured dog, but most dogs you will find them on the floor next to the heated dog bed to cool off. The cordura nylon fabric layer does not only adjust to the body temperature, the breathable feature of the bed release the body odor, so it doesn’t get sweaty. Another side effect of avoiding sweat or body odor accumulation is that the bed won’t smell so badly.

So, the question is whether the stifness adjustable nylon fabric layer in elevated position would make it orthopedic. It partially does, but we believe there are more factors to it. There are other beds on the market with an elevated cordura fabric layer who classifies themselves as orthopedic, while most dog beds classified as orthopedic are made out of a layer of memory foam. Does the elevated cordura nylon layer win over the the memory foam to be classified as orthopedic. We as designers of the DoggySnooze dog bed believe that truly orthopedic is a combination of factors and we have tried to incorporate into the design. However we choose the elevated nylon cordura layer over the memory foam for above mentioned reasons. A memory foam layer would work better for humans as we are build with broader shoulders, but we believe that the nylon fabric layer fits a dog’s body given the different positions of resting and sleeping.

What are the other factors contributing to a very orthopedic dog bed? The unique stiffness control system is one of them. You have a heavy dog with sore muscles. Lower the level of stiffness of the layer. You have this young puppie that needs a good rest at night – let him/her sleep on a stiff bed layer. Well, he might be having too much energy the next morning, but at least you know that on the long term he/she might be saved or delayed from the cripling hip dysplasia that is hurting so many dogs.

Another feature is the bolsters. We use very dense foam, so it works for the back and the head. A dog likes to feel back support (wasn’t the Wikipedia definition for orthopedic about back support) while taking a ‘deep’ nap. The side supports functions wonderfully as a head cushion and if your dog likes to stretch out remove the side supports. At the very least the bolster supports contribute to the orthopedic function.

To summarize this lengthy analysis the ‘elevated stiffness controlled breathable nylon fabric layer’ in combination with the bolster supports make the DoggySnooze dog bed a truly orthopedic dog bed.

Form meets function with the DoggySnooze dog beds, which can be classified as orthopedic, elevated, bolster, and chew resistant.

Redmond, WA – December 2, 2009 – Dutch Dog Design LLC (formerly Montare LLC) known for their market-leading DoggyRide dog bike trailers and strollers is adding dog beds as a new product line under the trademarked name DoggySnooze. The DoggySnooze dog beds are made by using materials and techniques similar to those used for their DoggyRide products and will be sold through similar channels, such as retail chain and boutique stores.

“We design innovative products that aim to improve the quality of life of our best companions, and this dog bed fits perfectly into that category,” says Matthys van Leeuwen, principal of Dutch Dog Design LLC. “The health, comfort, and versatile features of this dog bed product line comply with the main criteria of our designs, where form meets function.”

In 2003, Dutch Dog Design pioneered an area considered unachievable by many at the time but which has now become very common. When they started with their first dog bike trailer, eyebrows were raised among pet and cycling industry experts, but DoggyRide is now a household name for pet owners. The patented DoggySnooze dog bed line features the same revolutionary design ideas that characterize the other distinctive products of this company.

“People are becoming more aware of the long-term health effects of their pets’ sleeping habits, so with the help of veterinarians, we designed this product with orthopedic benefits being the main purpose. The concerns we have about the mattress we sleep on applies to dogs as well. When adding product durability and design to the mix, it adds to the potential of a well-conceived product,” says van Leeuwen.

The DoggySnooze is an elevated dog bed, which is available in three sizes for use indoors or outdoors. The bed fabric is breathable cordura for indoors or textilene vinyl for outdoors and stretchable to the desired comfort level. The bed frame includes comfort bolsters for the dog to cuddle against or to use as headrest. Accessories such as a containment structure assembly will be added to enhance versatility. The product will be available by the end of November 2009 for North America and by the end of January 2010 in Europe. Information about this product line can be found at www.doggysnooze.com.

About Dutch Dog Design LLC

Founded in 2003 as Montare LLC, the name was changed to Dutch Dog Design LLC in 2008, when it focused on dog products only. The DoggyRide dog bike trailer and stroller product line is the market leader in that particular niche. With sales offices in the Netherlands and the United States, its products are sold through distributors and retailers in eighteen countries in North America and Europe. DoggyRide and DoggySnooze are registered trademarks of Dutch Dog Design LLC.
